Maker Studios: The New Hollywood Media Company

Maker Studios is a new kind of media production company. Founded by YouTube stars, Maker develops content to be distributed online. Even though they’ve gained major success—signing deals with artists like Snoop Lion and Kevin Smith, Maker representative sat SXSW Interactive said “the goal isn’t TV or Movies.” Their goal is to make things they like, specifically for the Internet, and to maintain their autonomy from the traditional Hollywood production companies.

This talk overviewed the company’s history and how tech advancements have changed the way people consume media and made it possible for a company like Maker to exist. When YouTube started no one had the bandwidth (i.e. not enough Internet juice) to stream video content. Also, you needed a $15,000 camera to make anything that looked halfway decent. Now, people stream video all day and can create HD videos on their phones.
