TV Execs Measure Social Media to Better Understand Ratings

Do you use social apps like GetGlue or TunerFish?

GetGlue measures the number of fans who “check-in” to a specific show’s online room, kind of like a chat room, as well as those viewers’ engagement while they’re watching.

The metrics from these platforms allow TV executives understand their viewing numbers almost instantly. On the other hand, Nielsen, the go-to form of TV viewing measurement, doesn’t currently offer a product with similar capabilities. Last April, Nielsen announced it will replace its people meters (what are their people meters?) with a measure of Facebook Likes and Twitter Trends.

Will platforms like GetGlue, or even Facebook or Twitter, ever replace Nielsen ratings? Or will Nielsen partner with companies like GetGlue to gain valuable data and drop their perception of being out of touch?
